The Online Common Collaborative Movie (OCC Movie) Idea:

The Common Movie is not a new concept. The Concepts of Open Content movie also prevails over the Internet. The Wikipedia describes Open Movie like this

"An open content film (or open source film) is a movie or film produced using open source software and open source methodology. It is usually released with samples or source material (screenplay, script, footage, etc.) that are released under a license which permits other parties to create other derivative works or fan fiction. Its production is either an open call system in which a changing cast and crew collaborate in movie production, a system in which the end result is made available for re-use by others or in which exclusively open source products are used in production."

Even though there are not much movies released using open source software and still at its infancy. Recently one open source movie called “Elephant Dream” was released by the blender foundation. One can visit www.elephantsdream.com to know more about this movie. Also there are other movies like Plumiferos, Peach etc., which was made using open source softwares. The idea of using the open source softwares is any individual animator with a computer at home who can't afford the commercial software can use the open source software most of which are free for their work. The Open Movies usually comes with the raw footages used for the movie and the source materials same as that of open source software with certain types of licenses like Creative Commons License. You can refer to the sites described below in this page to know more about the Open source software and Open source Movies.

The Open source softwares are really best alternatives for those who cant afford using commercial software but still want to be exposed. But what if they can really afford to do the project in some commercial software where legal terms permit, in simple terms if they have a licenced software. Most of the aspiring creative professionals prefers use of professional software as they need more exposure to it. The Concepts of Open and Common movie does not provide an option to use commercial software unless or otherwise if they are open source ie., under GNU GPL Licence.

After considering everything we framed out the concept of Online Common Collaborative Movie (OCC Movie) in which one can use any software to produce the required content. But still we suggest using open source software since most them are free. But there are also other free software available online which are not open source but still free for using. There is a list of software both open source and other in this site which one can use for “The Tale of Arunachala” and also for other projects. A Strong homework has been done to find the best out of everything.

How the concept Works?

Okay. Now the question arises “How does this Concept of Collaborative Movie works?” It Involves some simple steps as described below.

  1. The Movie Director or the directorial team prepares the script, story board etc., and publishes it online with Creative Commons License (Attribution-Non-Derivative). If required the script and storyboard themselves can be prepared after an online brainstorming session using online chat or something like that. The Person to take note of every suggestion here is the Director.

  2. After Publishing the storyboard, the director publishes what he actually requires from the collaborative team. May it be the footage, animation clips, vector drawings, sound clips or loops and anything that is required for the production of the movie.

  3. The end user after visiting the website decides to join the team. He enters into an agreement with the Publisher or Director or Producer whoever it may be, that he is agreeing to do some sort of works for the project and as per the License terms prescribed by them. Mostly this would be the Creative Common Attribution License which gives credit for the work done.

  4. After the agreement he/she works out the project and updates often the works online despite of the consideration of which software or hardware is used unless or otherwise specified on license terms. One must be very clear with the License terms before entering into the agreement.

  5. After having all necessary materials, the director or the directorial team does the post production and creates the Final Movie.

  6. The Final Movie is then distributed online to the team members along with the materials for further exposure on how the movie has been done.

  7. The Final Movie is distributed for public viewing either online or through any other base which complies to the License terms.

These are the general terms we framed out for an online collaborative movie. It just contains the open movie concept but also provides option to use other softwares also. While Talking in terms of “The Tale of Arunachala”, the above steps are going to be followed with Creative Commons License. The Team is going to be given the full name credit in terms of the production of the movie and the official sponsor being the S.K.V. Trust and the other who opts to be so.
